Carolina Designer Craftsmen Guild announces Edie Carpenter as guest juror, 2017 Carolina Artisan Craft Market!

Edie Carpenter, Director of Artistic and Curatorial programs at GreenHill Center for North Carolina Art, will serve as guest juror for the emerging and career fine craft artists applying for a spot in the 2017 Carolina Artisan Craft Market to be held November 10 – 12 at the Raleigh Convention Center.

A rigorous two-step jury selection process attracts emerging and career craft artists who are presenting craft at the highest level.  Artists whose work reflects a mastery of technique and originality of design are encouraged to apply. The first step is a digital review of images and artist statement conducted by Carpenter. The second step includes an object jury by both the guest juror and the Carolina Designer Craftsmen Guild Standards Committee.

Carpenter has an art background deeply grounded in North Carolina art combined with far-reaching, international art experience. Her credentials include over twenty years of curatorial experience combined with academic and professional positions abroad.

Carpenter’s curatorial background encompasses leadership positions and skills with notable professional posts.  She served as director of the Paris branch of the Zabriskie Gallery where she worked for ten years before returning to North Carolina to lead GreenHill’s exhibition program. She curates GreenHill’s annual Winter Show survey of art in all mediums and has guest curated exhibitions at the North Carolina Museum of Art and ArtSpace among others.

Carpenter holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in art history from Barnard College, Columbia University, New York and a Master’s degree in Museum Studies and New Media from Université de Lyon III, Lyon France. She taught for two years at the University of Lyon and has given numerous lectures on contemporary art.

2017 marks the 48th year of the Carolina Designer Craftsmen Guild’s annual November event.  The Carolina Artisan Craft Market is a trusted resource for art collectors and first-time buyers looking for the finest contemporary and traditional craft being made in America. Previously juried and invited Carolina Designer Craftsmen Guild Exhibiting Artist Members will participate in the annual event as well.

Hosted by the Carolina Designer Craftsmen Guild, a local nonprofit organization based in Raleigh, the 3-day indoor event presents a survey of fine craft artists from across North Carolina and the U.S.  Fine craft artists interested in taking part are encouraged to apply for the 2017 Carolina Artisan Craft.  Applications are now being accepted until midnight, May 12, 2017. Carolina Designer Craftsmen Guild announces Charlotte Vestal Wainwright as guest juror, 2016 Carolina Artisan Craft Market!

Museum of Art & Design at North Carolina State University, will serve as guest juror for the emerging and career fine craft artists applying for a spot in the 2016 Carolina Artisan Craft Market to be held November 11 – 13 at the Raleigh Convention Center.Carolina Artisan Craft Market

A rigorous two-step jury selection process attracts emerging and career craft artists who are presenting craft at the highest level.  Artists whose work reflects a mastery of technique and originality of design are encouraged to apply. The first step is a digital review of images and artist statement conducted by Dr. Wainwright. The second step includes an object jury by both Dr. Wainwright and the Carolina Designer Craftsmen Guild Standards Committee.

During her tenure at the Gregg Museum before retiring in 2009, Dr. Wainwright built a design and decorative arts collection that includes historical and contemporary objects with focuses on American accomplishments and connections abroad. She organized over 50 exhibitions of contemporary American craft, showing ceramics, glass, textiles, furniture, and sculpture. She authored or edited catalogues for the majority of those exhibitions.

Dr. Wainwright was a contributing author to Houghton Mifflin’s The Humanities:  Cultural Roots and Continuities, now in its seventh edition. She was also a contributing author to the prize-winning Architects and Builders in North Carolina: A History of the Practice of Building (UNC Press, 1990). More recently she published The Remarkable Potters of Seagrove: The Folk Pottery of a Legendary North Carolina Community (2006, Lark Books). In 2008 Ben Owen III: A Profile appeared in Ceramics: Art and Perception March – May 2008 and in 2009 an essay on ceramicist Lydia Thompson. She has also curated exhibitions for the Collectors of Wood Art, the North Carolina Pottery Center, and Indiana Crafts Annual.

Dr. Wainwright received her B.A. in Modern European History from the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina, now UNC-G, and her Ph.D in the History of Art from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. She was elevated to Honorary Membership in the American Institute of Architects in recognition of her publications and her commitment of historic preservation in North Carolina and the region.

What’s the most rewarding or challenging aspect of serving as juror?

Jurying a show like this gives me the opportunity to see the diverse range of work being made by artists working in a wide variety of media, that otherwise I would not have a chance to see.  The most challenging aspect is trying to judge an artist’s work from just a few digital images and trying to imagine what the work is truly like in person, especially with 3-D works. 

What sets the Carolina Designer Craftsmen Guild apart?

What do you look for when selecting artists for the Carolina Artisan Craft Market?

I’m looking for artists whose knowledge of materials intersects with creative and experimental techniques, and who are challenging conventional notions of craft and design.

What craft trends have you seen emerging among this year’s applicants?

An interest in exploring a wide range of materials; an incorporation of historical or established techniques along with more experimental and contemporary methods.

 

Linda is currently organizing exhibitions of contemporary art and developing artists’ projects for the North Carolina Museum of Art’s Museum Park. Prior to joining the staff at the North Carolina Museum of Art, she co-directed the public art program for the state of North Carolina for several years, and was a curator at The Phillips Collection, a research associate at the National Gallery of Art, and a research assistant at the National Museum of American Art in Washington, DC. She has a BA in Art History from Wesleyan University and an MA in Art History from Williams College.

The Carolina Designer Craftsmen Guild is thrilled to announce the exhibiting artists for the Carolina Artisan Craft Market. Juried into the event, this year’s lineup represents 113 of the very best craft artists across North Carolina and the United States, including 20 artists who are new to the event. All will bring their fine craft to the Raleigh Convention Center Exhibit Hall, Raleigh, North Carolina, November 6 – 8, 2015.

Selected works include the following craft disciplines: glass, pottery, wood, basketry, wearable and decorative fiber, metal, leather, photography, printmaking and mixed media, as well as furniture and jewelry.

Jim and Shirl Parmentier, potters in Mars Hill, North Carolina who design, hand build and carve exquisite sculptural lamps, vessels, vases, boxes and bowls.

Lauren Markley (featured image), studio jeweler in Raleigh, North Carolina creates one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces utilizing reclaimed wood, sterling silver, brass and thread.

Paul Willsea, glass artist in Naples, New York creates complex, beautifully colored, blown forms that exude both structure and lightnessRon Lentz, Woodworker in VA creates jewelry and valet boxes and humidors from wood with exceptional color and grain, hand finished to a high luster.

Ron Lentz (image, right), woodworker in Midlothian, Virginia creates jewelry and valet boxes and humidors by carefully selecting wood for their color and grain, each neatly appointed with natural suede.
