Kathleen Dautel

Kathleen Dautel grew up in Oregon in a creative family. She always had artistic influences in my life, particularly her father who was a printmaker, painter and art professor.

While studying Art History and Fine Arts at the University of Oregon, I took my first metalsmithing class in 1990 and love it. After graduating in 1991, I continued my education and received a BFA in Metalsmithing in 1993.

Inspired by the buildings and environment in Portland, Kathleen decided to pursue a career in architecture, which brought her to Raleigh, NC. In 1999 Kathleen graduated from the NCSU Master of Architecture program and worked as a project designer for several great architecture firms in the area. Winning several design awards for many of the projects, Kathleen found her passion for metalsmithing never waned.

In the fall of 2009 Kathleen launched her own jewelry and metalsmithing line, Spark Metal Studio in Raleigh. Each design is original, laser cut stainless steel that is hand finished and hand colored with epoxy resin. The forms are both architecturally based and drawn from nature with a linear graphic quality.
