The designs reflect the Southern Appalachians’ plants, animals, cultural traditions and landscapes. Inspiration for this series is primarily from living and working in Balsam, North Carolina.
The Mark Trail Comic strip I read as a child encouraged exploring and caring for nature. Now as an adult I refer to those illustrations and their economy of line when preparing my carved images.
The works of Bernard Palissy, the French potter of the 1500s, amaze and challenge me with their intense detail and glaze color.
Laurey-Faye Long received a BFA from the University of Georgia and an AA from Haywood Community College. She was a resident artist of the Visual Arts Center of Alaska and is a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild and the Carolina Designer Craftsmen Guild.
