Mimi Hay, Fiber Artist
Mimi is a fiber artist who creates a line of women’s clothing inspired by her youth spent in Japan. The jackets, skirts, dresses and kimonos are often re-dyed or embellished with paint. The careful assortment of fabrics are then collaged by overlapping and appliqué methods using machine sewing, embroidery and hand beading where appropriate. They are also quilted to give emphasis to the stitched lines and to reinforce the three dimensional quality.
Mimi Hay
Born in Okinawa Japan, Mimi Hay’s early years were influenced by Japanese design found in furniture, pottery, textiles, artwork and flower arrangements. These impressions coupled with her isntictive love of nature are the inner resources from which her sense of style and design are achieved.
A lover of textile scraps, patters and texture, Mimi enjoys collaging a rich array of fabrics. Combining cherished bits of old prom dresses, trouser lingerie, family lines and laces, this technique lends a unique emotional value to the artwork as it keeps alive attachments to our past histories.
