Marina Bosetti, Ceramic Artist

Marina Bosetti, based in Raleigh, North Carolina, is a Ceramic Artist and Tile Maker.  Marina makes art tile for installations as murals, fireplace surrounds, and kitchen backsplashes.

Influenced by both the Art and Crafts Movement and Art Nouveau, Marina combines the aesthetics and function of one with the linear designs and flowing curves of the other to create contemporary designs for use in today’s homes as well as in traditional bungalows. Her tiles can also be used outdoors as stair risers, table tops, or in pools.

Marina Bosetti

I’ve spent my work life refining and redefining my relationship with clay. Over the years, I’ve progressed from sculpture to pottery to art tile and back again to my roots in sculpting and vessel building. My work has consistently distilled the abstract, sensual and spiritual aspects of life into accessible designs and imagery.
Tiles are cut from slabs of clay made on a slab roller and slowly dried between sheets of drywall. Although patterns may be repeated, each tile is individually drawn, waxed and colored using the ancient technique of “cuerda seca,” a cloisonné-inspired method that mimics the look of mosaic. The process which was developed in the fourteenth century by the Moors is very “green” in that very little glaze (chemicals) and water are needed for vibrant results. The tiles are fired to 2200 degrees Fahrenheit making them vitreous and suitable for use indoors and out.

In addition to being a Carolina Designer Craftsmen Guild member, I also belong to The Piedmont Craftsmen’s Guild, the American Art Pottery Association, the Contemporary Art Pottery Collectors Association, Tile Heritage Foundation and the Handmade Tile Association.
